Point of View


This Step-by-Step Point of View unit is a complete, NO-Prep unit with a variety of activities to help students learn an effective approach to identify and analyze first-person and third-person point of view. Through anchor charts, examples, mentor text, differentiated interactive pages, practice, task cards, and differentiated reading passages, students will have a thorough understanding of the point of view within a text. This 8-step process is in the perfect scaffolding order so students can learn point of view at a deeper level and will be able to retain the skill.

For each of the 4 lengthy reading passages, there are THREE VERSIONS FOR DIFFERENTIATION ranging from Lexile levels 600-1000. (Grade levels 4-6.5)

1. Teacher Notes: There are lesson plans explaining the steps and what to do each of the ten days.

2. Anchor Charts: Teach using the anchor charts and teacher notes. There are

two to choose from for differentiation. One with and one without 3rd-person limited and omniscient.

3. Mentor Text: There are original passages to model first-person and third-person. There is also a suggested list of picture books to assist in teaching point of view.

4. Interactive Notebook: Choose one of the 4 options for note-taking, so students can add information about point of view to their notebooks. It will serve as a future reference.

5. Activity: There is an activity to do with a whole group to get student up and moving.

6. Notice, Think and Wonder: This critical thinking activity has photographs to analyze for point of view.

7. Practice pages: There are three worksheets.

8. Task Cards: There are 24 task cards perfect for centers.

9. Writing Prompts: There are 16 prompt cards that are great for morning work, homework, and centers.

10. Passages for Practice: There are two differentiated passages with comprehension questions. One of the practice passages include two passages to compare and contrast.

11. Book Response: There are 8 different kinds of response printables that can be used with most picture books.

12. Assessment Passage: Assess students on their knowledge. There are two differentiated passages to compare and contrast with comprehension


13. Tracking: Write student names in the form. Record scores from a practice

page and assessment. Use this for future purposes in creating small group


14. Student Edition- With tablets being popular in the upper elementary classes, I

provided a student version that includes anchor charts and student practice.

This can be sent to the student via email or online storage like dropbox as long

as it is password-protected.

Anchor Charts: 1 with and 1 without 3rd-person limited and omniscient

Practice pages: Skip the practice page created to identify limited and omniscient for students who aren’t ready.

Passages: There are 3 different reading levels for all passages. Also, you can cross off the limited/omniscient in the questions.

Notes: Choose from completed interactive notes, sentence frames, and all notes. Or use the mini-anchor chart.
