Avoid the summer academic slide with math word problems! Think through the problem by highlighting, taking notes, illustrating, and explaining your answer!

How are the problems set up?

There are four sections.

  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Division

How many word problems are there for each section? 10 word problems per section.

How are the word problems set up?

The word problems were developed with a scaffolding method. It starts off with easy problems. The higher the number, the more difficult the problem.

What are the children expected to do for each word problem?

READ: Read through the word problem. Highlight key words and numbers.

NOTES: Use this space to figure out the answer.

ILLUSTRATE: Illustrate either figuring out the answer or the answer.

EXPLAIN: Explain how you got the answer. Write down each step.

ANSWER: Write the answer. Include the number and what it is. Example: 450 popsicles.
