What are reading comprehension passages with step-by-step questions? They are high-interest differentiated passages developed with two sets of questions. WHAT GRADES ARE AVAILABLE?

There are packets available for Grades 2-5.

WHAT ARE DIFFERENTIATED PASSAGES?

Differentiated passages have the same content, but are leveled to different Lexile reading levels. For each passage there are 3 different levels to cover a lower level, on grade level, and a higher level. Why? Not every student reads on grade level. Now, every student has the same opportunity to answer questions using the same story or information, but on their own reading level.

WHAT STANDARDS ARE COVERED?

All of the Common Core Reading Standards (Literacy and Informational Text) are covered in each bundle. They can be purchased separately as well.

How are the standards covered?

For each standard, there are two passages. The questions are formulated with that standard as the focus. There are other questions sprinkled in and spiraled throughout the passages.

WHAT IF MY STATE DOESN’T USE COMMON CORE?

Most of the skills covered are also included in other standards. Look at all the skills listed in the description of the bundles. The skills are labeled at the bottom of each passage so you will know the focus for that particular passage.

WHAT ARE STEP-BY-STEP QUESTIONS?

The first set of questions were formulated with multiple choice answers and are easier questions. The second set of questions are open-ended with many critical thinking opportunities requiring text evidence. The open-ended questions also have one writing prompt.

How can you use the questions effectively?

One way is to use the first set of questions to get to know the passage and the second set to delve deep into the text.
Another way is to use them for more differentiation. Use easier questions for struggling students and open-ended questions for higher-level students.

HOW CAN THESE COMPREHENSION PASSAGES BE USED WITH STUDENTS?

Once the instructor teaches the skill, the passages can be used for applying and reinforcing the skill. There are two passage per standard. One passage can be used for practice and the other can be used for assessment. This resource can used in:

Close reading
Small groups
